Small-area assessment of temperature-related mortality risks in England and Wales: a case time series analysis – The Lancet

Epidemiological literature on the health risks associated with non-optimal temperature has mostly reported average estimates across large areas or specific population groups. However, the heterogeneous distribution of drivers of vulnerability can result in local differences in health risks associated with heat and cold. We aimed to analyse the association between ambient air temperature and all-cause mortality across England and Wales and characterise small scale patterns in temperature-related mortality risks and impacts.

‘WRONG ALL ALONG’ Covid death figures ‘may have been completely wrong due to poor statistics’ – The Sun

UK health and statistics authorities allegedly used 14 inconsistent ways to define fatalities.

Many who died early in the pandemic were never actually tested for the virus while others may have died from something else entirely, according to experts.

…The Oxford study, from 800 freedom of information requests, found some deaths were attributed to Covid just because a care home provider said so and coronavirus was rife.

The report stated: “At the beginning of the pandemic, Public Health England linked data on positive cases to the NHS central register of patients who died.

“This definition meant that a patient who tested positive would be counted as a Covid death even if they were run over by a bus several months later.”

Did official figures overestimate Britain’s Covid death toll? The chaotic way mortalities were recorded during the pandemic could mean thousands were WRONGLY blamed on the virus – The Mail on Sunday

Did official figures overestimate Britain’s grim Covid death toll?

It’s a question that has been asked persistently by medics and members of the public alike almost since the start of the pandemic.

…Last week, in the first of a series of special reports probing the science that has underpinned our pandemic response, The Mail on Sunday set about tackling the ongoing concerns that tests used to diagnose Covid were picking up people who were not actually infected.

The conclusion of some scientists was, yes, they did. And there were those who maintained that despite shortcomings, PCR swabs – used by millions – were accurate enough.

High Covid death rates skewed by people who died from other causes, admits Sajid Javid – The Telegraph

Daily reported Covid death figures are too high because people are dying from conditions unrelated to the virus after testing positive, Sajid Javid has admitted.

On Wednesday, there were 359 deaths reported in Britain, but the Health Secretary said that “many” people were being included in the count who “would not have necessarily died of Covid”.

His comments came after death data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a large discrepancy in weekly death registrations compared to the figures released on the Government dashboard.

For the week ending Jan 7, the UK Health Security Agency reported 1,282 deaths of people who had died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.

However, ONS data show there were just 992 death registrations with Covid mentioned on the death certificate in that week.

A QUARTER of all Covid ‘deaths’ are now patients who died WITH the virus not from it, official data shows – Daily Mail

Covid was not the underlying cause of death in nearly a quarter of virus-related fatalities last week, official figures suggest.

The most up-to-date Office for National Statistics figures showed there were 922 deaths registered in England and Wales mentioned coronavirus on the death certificate in the week to January 7. Of them, Covid was not ruled to be the primary reason for the death in 210 cases, or 23 per cent — although it may have been a contributing factor.

For comparison, the share of deaths not primarily due to the virus stood at around 16 per cent when Omicron first arrived in the UK. With the Alpha wave last January, before the country embarked on its historic vaccination drive, the proportion was about 10 per cent.

The rise of the milder strain has led to a similar pattern emerging in hospitals, where nearly half of virus inpatients are not primarily needing treatment for the infection — compared to about 25 per cent with Delta.

Covid outbreaks now shrinking in 96% of England’s neighbourhoods: Maps show how Omicron is fizzling out naturally and graphs lay bare how SIX TIMES fewer deaths happened in third wave despite cases being triple level of last winter – Daily Mail

EXCLUSIVE: UKHSA data shows infections are dropping in 96% of the country’s nearly 7,000 neighbourhoods

Parts of Castle Point, Shropshire and Bexley have seen infections fall by more than 70% week-on-week

And MailOnline analysis shows Omicron wave deaths were seven times lower than the peak last winter

Official figures show half as many Covid patients were in hospital at one time compared to the Alpha peak

And 4.5 times fewer patients were moved to critical care beds during the latest wave compared to last winter

Coronavirus cases are now falling in virtually every area of England, official figures show as the Omicron wave continues to collapse with deaths six times lower than in the second wave.

Some 6,519 out of 6,790 neighbourhoods (96 per cent) around the country recorded a fall in infections in the week to January 11, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Response issued after claim that first Omicron death in UK happened in Northampton – Northampton Chronicle

Northampton General Hospital (NGH) has responded to a claim in the national press that the first Omicron death in the United Kingdom happened at the site last week.

This comes after LBC radio station had a man called John call in on Friday (December 17) saying that his step-father had died of the new variant at ‘a hospital in Northampton’.

John told radio host Nick Ferrari that his step-father in his 70s reportedly died with Omicron on Monday (December 13) after not being vaccinated.

A spokesperson for NHS Northamptonshire CCG said: “The NHS system in Northamptonshire has not recorded an Omicron-related death at this time.”

Just six healthy children died of Covid in a year, NHS analysis shows The Telegraph

Only six healthy children with no underlying health conditions died as a direct result of catching Covid during a 12-month window, NHS analysis has revealed.

Four died from Covid, while two developed a Kawasaki-like inflammatory condition called Pims-TS, caused by the virus.

The data calls into question the wisdom of closing schools and forcing children to spend months at home when the health risk to under-18s is so small.

Children ‘have 99.995 per cent chance’ of surviving virus

Peter Doshi, PhD, is an editor of the BMJ and on the faculty of the University of Maryland.

  • Most hopitalisations in the UK are among the fully vaccinated
  • Pfizer trials did not show a reduction in deaths–the evidence is flimsy
  • These mRNA products are qualitatively different from standard vaccines
  • The definitions for vaccines ahve changed
  • We shouldn’t assume the new [mRNA products] are like other childhood vaccines which get mandated [in the US]

The Kids Are Alright Why now is the time to rethink COVID safety protocols for children —and everyone else – New York Magazine

The kids are safe. They always have been.

It may sound strange, given a year of panic over school closures and reopenings, a year of masking toddlers and closing playgrounds and huddling in pandemic pods, that among children the mortality risk from COVID-19 is actually lower than from the flu. The risk of severe disease or hospitalization is about the same.

This is true for the much-worried-over Delta variant. It is also true for all the other variants, and for the original strain. Most remarkably, it has been known to be true since the very earliest days of the pandemic — indeed it was among the very first things we did know about the disease. The preliminary mortality data from China was very clear: To children, COVID-19 represented only a vanishingly tiny threat of death, hospitalization, or severe disease.

Yet for a year and a half we have been largely unwilling to fully believe it. Children now wear masks at little-league games, and at the swimming pool, and when school reopens in the fall they will likely wear masks there, too. But the kids are not at risk themselves, and never were. Now, thanks to vaccines, the vast majority of their parents and grandparents aren’t any longer, either.

Deaths in Children and Young People in England following SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first pandemic year: a national study using linked mandatory child death reporting data – Research Square

25 CYP died of SARS-CoV-2 during the first pandemic year in England, equivalent to an infection fatality rate of 5 per 100,000 and a mortality rate of 2 per million. Most had an underlying comorbidity, particularly neurodisability and life-limiting conditions. The CYP who died were mainly >10 years and of Asian and Black ethnicity, compared to other causes of the death, but their absolute risk of death was still extremely low.

Underlying Medical Conditions and Severe Illness Among 540,667 Adults Hospitalized With COVID-19, March 2020–March 2021 – CDC

Introduction
Severe COVID-19 illness in adults has been linked to underlying medical conditions. This study identified frequent underlying conditions and their attributable risk of severe COVID-19 illness.

Conclusion
Certain underlying conditions and the number of conditions were associated with severe COVID-19 illness. Hypertension and disorders of lipid metabolism were the most frequent, whereas obesity, diabetes with complication, and anxiety disorders were the strongest risk factors for severe COVID-19 illness. Careful evaluation and management of underlying conditions among patients with COVID-19 can help stratify risk for severe illness.

Flu and pneumonia deaths now 10 times higher than Covid – The Telegraph

The number of people dying with flu and pneumonia on their death certificate in England and Wales is now 10 times higher than those with Covid, figures show.

The latest weekly data on deaths from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that there were 84 deaths mentioning Covid in the week ending June 11. There were 1,163 involving flu and pneumonia.

Registered Covid deaths fell by 14 per cent since the last update, in the week ending June 4, when 98 deaths were recorded.

Covid deaths now make up just 0.8 per cent of all deaths – down from 1.3 per cent in the previous week, despite the fact that week included the late May bank holiday, meaning there were fewer death registrations.

…The figures are much lower than would usually be expected for respiratory disease at this time of year. The five-year average for deaths involving flu and pneumonia in the same week is 1,704.

Kids, Covid and Delta – The New York Times

This evidence suggests that serious versions of Covid will continue to be extremely rare in children.

As you can see here, some common activities — and several other diseases — have caused significantly more childhood deaths than Covid has:
